The latest Nation’s Report Card came out swinging with headlines no parent wants to read: math and reading scores at historic lows, half of U.S. seniors performing below basic, and gaps widening instead of closing. The big story? America’s schools are tanking.
But here in Phoenix, our story reads differently. Freedom Academy, the K–8 charter I serve, climbed from a D rating to a B-. That’s not perfection—but it’s progress. And progress matters when the national trend is freefall.
The Real Story Behind the “D”
Let’s set the record straight: Freedom Academy wasn’t a chronic underperformer. For years, we carried an “A” rating. Our students weren’t just passing—they were excelling. In fact, before the dip, public high schools begged for our 8th graders because they knew our kids could read at college level.
So what happened? It wasn’t chronic failure—it was a series of disruptions that hit back-to-back:
- A relocation into an entirely different demographic,
- The retirement of our founding principal and superintendent, and
- The upheaval of COVID.
What Changed?
We didn’t follow the script. While teacher’s unions and DEI consultants doubled down on politics, we doubled down on phonics, math, and culture that actually builds kids up. We reminded ourselves that parents send their children here for education, not indoctrination.
A Personal Stand
Two years ago, at our 8th grade commencement, I stood at the podium as keynote speaker and looked parents straight in the eye. Standing there not just as a keynote speaker but as President of Freedom Academy and State Charter Representative, I told parents…
“There are things coming down the line in education
that I will not comply with.”
They knew this was in direct response to the Biden Administration’s illegal rewrite of Title IX—policies that put politics ahead of biology, safety, and parental rights. That day I made a promise: Freedom Academy would not bend.
And not one person walked out of that room in protest. They leaned in. They wanted safety, not compliance.
This is what parents want.
Proof Over Politics
And here’s the proof. While the national report card sinks to its lowest in decades, Freedom Academy climbed the ladder. From D to B-—not because we followed the latest mandates, but because we didn’t.
No DEI theatrics. No union posturing. No compliance with illegal federal overreach that has nothing to do with multiplication tables or reading comprehension. Just a relentless commitment to kids and truth.
The Bigger Lesson
Our school’s climb is not a brag—it’s a warning and a blueprint. America doesn’t need more glossy programs. It needs courage, clarity, and a return to the basics.
When schools stop echoing political slogans and start taking ground in academics, kids win.

Any one of those could have rattled a school. Facing all three in rapid succession knocked Freedom Academy from its longtime “A” down to a “D.” That grade wasn’t a verdict on student ability or teacher quality—it was a snapshot taken during transition.
